about

I made this piece in January / February of 2021, deep in a very dark and cold NYC covid winter. One of my pastimes is searching on google maps for places off the beaten path, and Norilsk, Russia was one of those places I've found that fascinated me. It's a city of 180,000+ people inside the Arctic Circle that due to heavy mining, generates more sulfur pollution than all of the United States combined. It is a "closed city" with the Russian government issuing only a few hundred visitor visas a year, and is surrounded by 5.9 million acres of dead and dying forest, an area larger than the state of New Jersey.

I made this envisioning the death of a forest - using recordings of nature and layering them on top off themselves emulating a forest scene, a forest that over the course of the piece experiences death.

I will be donating 100% of Bandcamp sales to the environmental organization Greenpeace to aid in the fight towards holding corporate polluters accountable.
